A second round of public meetings for the Statewide Pedestrian Master Plan has begun.

The Maui meeting is set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday April 7 at the Cameron Center Auditorium.

Project planners said that, in the past decade, Hawaii has been one of the leading states in pedestrian accidents. From 2001 to 2005, Hawaii had the fifth highest pedestrian fatality rate nationwide. Among the elderly, Hawaii leads the nation with a rate of 40.2 deaths per 100,000 people 65 years old and older, nearly three times the rate of the rest of the nation.

The master plan aims to improve pedestrian safety and mobility, support different modes of transportation and provide guidance on the best use of resources to accomplish the plan’s goals.

The development of the plan began in January 2010. It is expected to continue through July.
