Planner: Maui Shorelines Impaired by Development

Because more and more of Maui’s sandy shorelines are being “impaired” by development and uncontrollable environmental issues, laws and procedures to protect the environment must be followed, county and state officials said Wednesday morning.

“We want to develop in an environmentally sensible way,” said Maui County coastal resource planner Jim Buika.

Buika said that according to a 2003 Maui shoreline inventory study, 40 percent of Maui’s sandy shorelines have been “impaired” since 1949.

Those once-sandy shorelines are no more because development, erosion and other environmental factors have taken them away…
