More Wind Turbines on Hawaiian Homelands

Public Notice is hereby given that the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) intends to issue general leases, pursuant to Chapter 171-95.3, Hawaii Revised Statutes, as amended, for renewable energy projects on Hawaiian home lands at Kahikinui, Pulehunui, and Honokowai. The public is invited to comment on the proposed leasing of these lands for energy projects at one of the meetings listed below to be held before the Hawaiian Homes Commission at DHHL Paukukalo Community Center, 655 Kaumuali’i Street, Wailuku, Maui. Maps of the proposed area will be provided at the meeting.

  • Wednesday, March 20, 2013 – 6:00 pm
  • Thursday, March 21, 2013 – 9:00 am

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands reserves the right to cancel or modify this disposition of its lands at its sole discretion.

Proposal by Sempra to expand their windmill operation from 21 Megawatts to an additional  120 Megawatts. There would be an additional 39 windmills.  The location will be east of the present wind farm on Hawaiian Homelands.

A significant difference from the present wind operation would be the fact that the power would not be for Maui residents, but would be shipped off-island to Oahu by undersea cable.
