Maui Has 2 of Top 10 Hawai’i Toxic Release Sites

The Maui News reports:

Maui Electric Co. had two of the top 10 facilities in Hawaii listed for toxic releases in 2010 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The power utility’s Kahului generating station ranked fifth with 190,022 pounds of chemicals in 2010, and MECO’s Maalaea generating station was 10th with 84,199 pounds.

MECO spokeswoman Kau’i Awai-Dickson said Hawaii’s toxic releases decreased 15 percent in 2010 compared with 2009.
