In a project to reduce on-site energy consumption, the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) has contracted with solar PV system leasing company, SolarCity, to create one of the largest photovoltaic (PV) systems on Maui. Installed earlier this month, the project has nearly 2,000 panels and an output of 463 kilowatts.

The installation is just one project in a multi-faceted environmental plan that was enacted five years ago. Other initiatives in the plan include high efficiency equipment, use of biodegradable products and a comprehensive recycling program.

For companies and individuals unable to afford the up front capital cost of installing a PV electric system, leasing a system from one of the companies like SolarCity my provide a solution.  One should also investigate whether obtaining a loan to install the system, while taking on the maintenance costs themselves may provide a better return to the homeowner or business.
