Hawaii regulators OK Auwahi Wind Project

HONOLULU — The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission has approved a 20-year contract for California company, Sempra, planning to build and operate a wind farm to sell electricity to Maui’s power company.

Sempra Generation, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, said Thursday the commission approved the contract for Maui Electric Company to purchase 21 megawatts of wind power from Sempra’s Auwahi Wind project on Maui’s Ulupalakua ranch.

Construction on Auwahi Wind is targeted to begin early next year.
