County Charter Meeting

The commission will meet Monday Oct 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Planning Department conference room in the Kalana Pakui building.

Topics being considered by the commission include revamping the council election process, changing the length of council terms; returning to a closed party primary system; council approval of department heads; allowing the mayor to appoint the fire chief; a biennial budget cycle; changing the rules for initiatives, referendums and recalls; and creating a county auditor.

Proposals have been made on the following items:

  • the council elective process;
  • two versus four-year council terms;
  • returning to a closed party primary system;
  • council approval of department heads;
  • the mayor approving the appointment of the fire chief;
  • returning Water Department management to an autonomous body;
  • changing the county’s budget process to a two-year cycle;
  • changing the rules for initiatives;
  • referendums and recalls;
  • and creating a position of county auditor.
