Residents of Maui jumped into action last night and phoned and emailed Councilmembers requesting that they NOT approve the increate in hotel heights from 120′ to 180’. One councilmember said he got 47 calls and emails when he arrived in the office, and more were coming in. This is an 18 hour period.
The Council’s Planning Committee decided that they better NOT approve that excessive height limit because they did not want to see a “Waikiki-ization” of Maui. They asked their staff to do some more research with a goal of setting a lower height limit, perhaps not allowing any new hotels higher than the highest now on Maui.
This item will be on a future Planning Committee agenda.
