It has been another exciting year! Enclosed you will find the Maui Tomorrow Foundation 2016 Annual Report, which highlights a few of the important activities we have been involved in this year. We are able to step up and accomplish these things because of generous donations from people like you.
Following on last year’s successful opposition to the proposed Olowalu Town, Maui Tomorrow had another fantastic outcome at Olowalu, where the State Department of Transportation was about to begin construction on yet another shoreline hardening project. Working with the community, we took what many thought was a lost cause, and turned it into another victory. Going forward, we have a new relationship with this government agency that will help us to prevent shoreline hardening around Maui.
As I write this, we have just gotten word that Makena Resort’s latest 47-acre project will come before the Maui Planning Commission in January. As before, we will rally the community to keep Makena special, and to require the developer to assess the full environmental impact of the entire 1,800 acre resort on ocean water quality, public beach access, mauka-makai views, and dozens of important cultural features.
Maui Tomorrow continues to be a persuasive voice for responsible growth and planning decisions for our island home. While we strive for win-win solutions, we are not afraid to litigate when absolutely necessary on behalf of our `āina and our Maui lifestyle. This year, with your generous support, we will continue to serve as a watchdog for environmental and land use laws.
In closing, I would like to wish you another relaxing and peaceful holiday season. I hope that you will have a chance to celebrate and enjoy some of the good things about Maui that we all treasure; those we have already saved, and those we are trying to protect!
