Maui’s Electricity Future – it may NOT be what it used to be:
An Undersea Cable to Oahu and Maui’s Electricity Future
Upcountry Community Meeting at the Kula Community Center

The program will begin with Maui Electric’s Mat McNeff giving an update on the status of installing solar PV systems on Maui homes and businesses. Can all homes install a PV? What are the tax benefits? What will Maui Electric require before a PV can be installed and connected to their grid? How will net-metering affect you?
The main agenda item will be a panel discussing the “Implications of an expensive undersea electricity cable from Maui to Oahu.” Will Maui residents benefit with lower electricity rates? What energy production projects will need to be built on Maui? Are there environmental costs or benefits? Will all important decisions be made in Honolulu or will Maui residents and leaders have a say? Will electricity service become more or less reliable?
The panel will begin with Hawai’i Public Utilities Commissioner Michael Champley who will discuss the basis for PUC energy decisions. Then the undersea cable and its implications for Maui will be discussed by Hawaiian Electric’s Manager of System Planning Ross Sakuda, Life of the Land Executive Director Henry Curtis, and Maui County Energy Commissioner Doug McLeod. There will be audience questions following the panel.
